What is UroLift?

UroLift is a novel implantable therapy for uncomfortable or difficult urination due to a large prostate. UroLift does not destroy the tissue of the prostate, but instead open the urethra by pull the sides of the prostate outward.

Why might I need a UroLift placement?

UroLift is a minimally invasive technique for the relief of problems with urination caused by a large prostate. UroLift is ideal for men with a large prostate on medical therapy, who are not longer getting enough benefit from medication or don’t want to take medication every day. UroLift can be considered prior to starting medical therapy, but most men choose to try medication first.

UroLift can also be used for men with difficulty urinating who are undergoing treatment for prostate cancer to relief urinary symptoms while undergoing radiation therapy.

Preparing for your Sacral Neurostimulator:

In general, preparation for a UroLift placement will involve the following steps:

  • You will have bloodwork and other testing done at the hospital
  • The hospital will call you to confirm arrival time and instructions
  • You will be asked if you have allergies to medications, anesthesia, or latex.
  • You should inform your doctor of any medications, vitamins, or supplements that you are taking.
  • You should refrain from taking anti-inflammatories or blood-thinning medications a week prior to the procedure. Any blood thinning medications will be discussed with you and your doctors
  • It is also important to inform your doctor if are diabetic, asthmatic, or have any other medical conditions.
  • You may be asked to refrain from eating 8 hours prior to your scheduled arrival time and drinking 2 hours prior to your arrival time.
  • You should remove all metal objects and accessories such as eyeglasses, jewelry, watch, etc. as they can interfere with the imaging technique used.
  • You should arrange for someone to drive you home after the procedure.

What happens during placement of a UroLift Implant?

When you arrive at the hospital you will meet an anesthesiologist who will discuss with you the options for keeping you comfortable during the procedure. This procedure can be done with general anesthesia or spinal anesthesia, or with moderate sedation for some men.

After you are sleep you will have a camera placed into your bladder. Your surgeon will inspect your prostate, then insert the UroLift applicator device, which is used to place UroLift clips in a sequential manner to open the urethra.

When your procedure is done the camera will be removed. No urethral catheter is required for this procedure. You must urinate after the procedure before you are able to go home.

Post-Operative Instructions

Following your surgery it is normal to see a small amount of blood in your urine and have some urgency to urinate. These symptoms usually resolve within a few days.

You may eat normally and have normal activity after this procedure.

What can I expect after my UroLift Implants?

Most men see an immediate improvement in their urination following their procedure. Pain following the procedure is usually minimal and limited to some discomfort with urination. Long term studies are ongoing for UroLift, but you should expect the benefits of the surgery to last at least 5 years.

What are the risk of having UroLift Implants?

Common risks of the UroLift procedure include discomfort with urination and some blood in the urine. Infections of the urine and persistent discomfort is unusual. Injury to the prostate, bladder, or related structures is rare.
